An intercultural comedian

by Peter Lee on May 22, 2009

Wonho Chung, a stand-up comedian gaining fame in the Middle East, speaks fluent Arabic and English.  His father is a Korean and his mother a Vietnamese, but he was born in Saudi Arabia and grew up in Jordan.  More impressive than his background and language skills are his unique ability to make jokes that show glimpse of his intercultural wit and insights relating to the Arab culture.  The guy knows how to connect with Arabs.

The reason I introduce him here is that he portrays the kind of intercultural lifestyle I encourage people to develop.  The guy seems to possess a good deal of self-awareness and he carries himself with confidence and peace over who he is.  He speaks several languages, and has cultural insights and understanding that enables him to perform well in his work of stand-up comedy.  He is a TCK (Third Culture Kid) who learned to deal with his own multicultural and multiethnic identity.

More than anything, he is a fellow interculturalist and a good example of how the world is going truly intercultural.  Thus, Wonho deserves a mention among the ranks of talented and unique intercultural performers and artists.
